To show your logo next to your emails in Gmail and Yahoo Mail, set up BIMI. For Apple Mail, you can use BIMI or the free Apple Branded Mail. Outlook does not show BIMI logos, so it shows only the profile picture of the sending account. Each provider sets its own rules, and the rules change. Before you buy a certificate, check the current requirements of the providers your recipients use.

BIMI

Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) is an email standard. It connects your domain to a logo through a DNS record. The BIMI Group maintains the standard and lists the providers that support it.
1

Set DMARC to enforcement

Configure SPF and DKIM for your domain first. Then set your DMARC policy to p=quarantine or p=reject, with pct=100. Check your current record:
An example DMARC record that meets the requirement:
Before you set p=reject, make sure that every service that sends mail for your domain passes SPF or DKIM. Otherwise, providers reject its mail.
2

Make the logo file

BIMI uses an SVG in the SVG Tiny Portable/Secure (SVG Tiny PS) profile. Gmail requires these properties:
  • A square logo, centered, on a solid background
  • At least 96x96 pixels, set in absolute pixels
  • A file size of 32 KB or smaller
The BIMI Group has a logo generator that converts an SVG to this profile.
3

Get a mark certificate

Most providers show a BIMI logo only with a certificate from an authorized issuer. There are two types:
  • A Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) requires a registered trademark. Gmail shows a checkmark next to senders with a VMC.
  • A Common Mark Certificate (CMC) does not require a trademark. Gmail accepts it. Other providers may not.
4

Host the files

Put the logo and the certificate at public HTTPS URLs on your domain, for example:
5

Add the BIMI DNS record

Create a TXT record at default._bimi.yourdomain.com. The l= tag points to the logo, and the a= tag points to the certificate:
After setup, DNS changes can take a day or two to spread. Each provider then takes its own time to start showing the logo.

Apple Branded Mail

Apple Branded Mail shows your logo in Apple Mail without a mark certificate. It works only in Apple Mail. Set it up in Apple Business Connect. Before you start, make sure that your domain meets Apple’s requirements:
  • A DMARC record on the domain.
  • DKIM on every email you send. SPF alone is not enough.
  • An MX, A, or AAAA record on the domain.
1

Add your brand

Sign in to Apple Business Connect, add your business, and add your brand and logo. Apple must approve the brand and the logo.
2

Add your email domains

Open Branded Mail and add your email domains, subdomains, or email addresses. One brand can have up to 100 of them.
3

Verify the domain

Add the DNS TXT record that Apple gives you, then click Verify. Finish verification within 14 calendar days, or you must start again.
Apple Mail shows the logo on iPhone only when the default language is English, Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Spanish, or Simplified Chinese. The logo also shows in iCloud Mail. Apple’s Branded Mail guide has the current rules.

Profile pictures

Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo Mail show the profile picture of the sending account to recipients on the same provider. This works without DNS changes, but only for mail you send from that account.
  • Gmail and Google Workspace: set the picture in your Google Account under Personal info.
  • Outlook and Microsoft 365: set the picture on your Microsoft account profile.
  • Yahoo Mail: set the picture in your Yahoo account settings.
Some email clients also show a Gravatar image. Gravatar links an image to one email address, not to a domain. Add and verify each address you send from.

FAQs

Use Apple Branded Mail, which is free and works only in Apple Mail. Or set up BIMI with a certificate, which also covers Gmail and Yahoo Mail.
Set up BIMI with a VMC or a CMC. Gmail needs DMARC at p=quarantine or p=reject with pct=100, and a logo in SVG Tiny PS.
No. Outlook shows only the profile picture of a Microsoft sending account.
Only for a VMC. A CMC does not need a trademark, and Gmail accepts it. Check which certificates your other providers accept.
Check these causes:
  • DMARC is not at p=quarantine or p=reject with pct=100.
  • The provider does not accept your certificate type, or the certificate URL does not load.
  • The logo is not a valid SVG Tiny PS file.
  • DNS changes have not spread yet, or the provider has not started to show the logo.
The logo itself does not. The SPF, DKIM, and DMARC setup that BIMI requires helps providers trust your mail.

Show other companies' logos in your email

BIMI controls your own logo in the inbox. To show a recipient’s company logo, look it up from their work email domain.
